The federal COVID-19 website—once a vital source for vaccine updates, free testing kits, and treatment resources—has been radically repurposed by the Trump administration.

Now, covid.gov opens with a photo of Donald Trump flanked by the words “lab” and “leak,” under an official White House banner. Instead of public health tools, the site promotes the unproven theory that COVID-19 came from a Chinese laboratory—while erasing almost all practical guidance for everyday Americans.

Gone are links to order free tests, stay current on vaccines, or learn about long COVID. In their place: accusations that Dr. Anthony Fauci pushed a “preferred narrative,” and claims that public officials tried to hide the truth.

While the exact origin of COVID-19 may never be fully confirmed, the overwhelming majority of scientists who study the virus believe it emerged through a natural spillover event—when a virus jumps from animals to humans.

That’s how SARS began in 2003 (likely jumping from bats to civet cats to humans), and how MERS spread in 2012, eventually traced to dromedary camels—though it took nearly a decade to confirm camels as the likely source.

Spillover events have triggered some of the deadliest pandemics in human history, including the 1918 influenza pandemic, believed to have started in the American Midwest through human-pig contact.

Most recently, in August 2024, scientists writing in the Journal of Virology reaffirmed their position: while they remain open to new evidence, the weight of scientific data still favors a natural origin for COVID-19 over a lab-based one.

Researchers are also monitoring H5N1, a bird flu virus that’s begun spreading among U.S. dairy cows—another potential zoonotic threat.

Still, the Trump administration has made the lab leak theory—dismissed by many global experts—the centerpiece of the federal government’s COVID site.

Meanwhile, COVID remains a deadly and debilitating threat. In the past month alone, 325 Americans have died from the virus per week on average, and millions continue to suffer from long COVID—facing symptoms like chronic fatigue, memory loss, and brain fog.

Once a site built to save lives, covid.gov is now a political billboard—erasing facts, gutting public health tools, and rewriting history in real time.
